When you drive a Mercedes-Benz R-Class, your air suspension shocks help you grip to the road and engage in exhilarating rides. By dampening vibrations during your drives, your shocks help you make aggressive and sporty turns, enjoy a smooth cruise, and even help you reduce basic wear and tear to other parts. But, as with most of your SUV components, shocks break down over time.
You’ll know when you’re experiencing shock problems when you notice some (if not all) of the following symptoms:
- Leaks when you’re parked
- Difficulty controlling your Mercedes-Benz—especially when you try to turn
- Rough and uncomfortable drives
- Clanging sound when you cruise
Upon noticing faulty shocks, you’ll want to make a replacement ASAP. After all, you won’t want to spin out at a busy intersection from your shocks not doing their job. Thankfully, a quality new set of shocks for your Mercedes-Benz W251 is only a few clicks away when you order with AEROSUS. Here’s even a quick step-by-step guide for DIY repairing your shocks.
How to Replace Your W251 Shocks
Getting Started:
Before beginning, make sure:
Shock Replacement
1. Remove Your Wheel. As basic as it sounds—start by removing your lug nuts before pulling your wheel of its base.
2. Disconnect Your Shock’s Wire. You’ll find the wire in the inner part of your wheel well. Then, disconnect with your hands.
3. Disconnect your arm linkage to get to your air shock. After getting your sway bar arm linkage disconnect, remove the nuts and bolts mounted to your shock along with taking out the ball joint nut and wire holding.
Before removing your air suspension shock, you’ll also want to shut off your air line. Start by removing your engine bay trim, engine bay panels, and side panels. Then, remove the three nuts on the protective top to access your air line. From there, unscrew the piece atop your air line with your fingers. You can then remove your air shock.
4. Install your air shock and fit your air line. Start by aligning your shock into its proper position. You’ll then place your air line into its correct fitting spot—push down until you feel it firmly in place. Next, you’ll screw in the three lug nuts on the top of your shock. Finish off by reinstalling your panels and trims.
5. Reconnect your upper control arm components. From here, you’ll essentially perform everything in reverse order from your disassembly. Start by refitting the ball joint to the upper arm piece. Next, you’ll screw in the nut and bolt on the lower side of your shock. Then, resecure your sway bar arm and the wire pieces to keep your shock in place. Finish off by reconnecting the proper electronic wire to your shocks.
6. Finish up. For the final steps, put your wheel back on your Mercedes-Benz SUV. Then, lower your R-Class, reconnect your battery, and start your engine for a few minutes to help your vehicle adjust to your repairs.
To make sure you fit your shock properly, check the area for any leaks. If no messes occur, you’ve completed your installation.
