Be sure to lower it onto jack stands after jacking up your car. This way, you have extra reinforcement for your suspended sedan.
What Causes Suspension Issues?
If you ever take a look at your Mercedes Benz’s suspension, you’ll find it’s a complicated system. Anything from a small leak to worn out and defective parts leads to that ugly sagging and rough ride.
However, one culprit ranks far above the others. And that’s leaking air from your rear air springs.
How to Replace Rear Air Springs on a Mercedes Benz E Class
What you’ll need:
- Replacement Mercedes Benz W212 or S212 rear air springs
- Floor jack
- Socket OR lug wrench for loosening your tires
- 10 mm spanner wrench
- 7 mm socket wrench
- Screwdriver
What to Do:
1. Loosen your wheel bolts with your socket or lug wrench. No need to remove your tire yet. For now, loosen those lugs and move on.
2. Jack up your Mercedes Benz E Class.
3. Remove your wheel.
4. Remove your battery. This prevents your air suspension system from powering on or moving while working on your car.
5. Pull off the plastic sleeve beneath your E Class’s lower arm. This step will allow easy access to the bottom part of your air spring.
6. Remove the cable from the shock’s base. Doing so gives your arms more room when installing your air springs. Trust us, this makes life a lot easier.
7. Unbolt your rear brake calliper. Again, this allows for extra room when reinstalling your air springs.
8. Lower your dust cover. You know you lowered the right cover if you see the outer plastic of your air spring.
9. Remove the nut in your valve block. You can access the valve block next to your compressor.
10. Remove the top of the spring from its mounting point. This step grants you access to the nut of the air spring’s airline.
11. Remove the fitting on the airline. Also, double-check there’s no gashes or damage here.
12. Cover the fitting line. This prevents unwanted dust, dirt, and particles from entering.
13. Remove the base of your air spring from the lower section of the arm. The air spring might be in there tight. If this is the case, don’t be afraid to use a blunt object like a hammer for help.
14. Pull out your air spring.
15. Insert your new spring. The base of the air spring fits in perfect form. This means you’ll need to rotate it to fit. This step is critical for allowing your airline to connect. Keep in mind that this step is tricky, so take your time. (Remember: Slide in, Compress, Rotate).
16. Remove the plastic (NOT brass) protector of your airline.
17. Insert your airline. Push this piece directly into the spring. It’s a smooth and easy process if you did it right.
18. Put your calliper back into place. You’ll need to torque the bolts for the calliper to fit.
19. Reattach your cable shocks.
20. Reattach your battery.
21. Make sure your air spring inflates.
22. Reattach your rear wheel.
23. Pump your brakes. This step recalibrates your brake pads.
